PATH Premier Accredited
We are one of only two therapeutic riding centers in the region to earn Premier Accredited Center status from the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.)—a mark of the highest standards in safety, professionalism, and program quality.
Natural Horsemanship Philosophy
Our programs are rooted in natural horsemanship, creating a shared language between staff, volunteers, students, and horses. This approach builds trust, respect, and meaningful connections that enhance every lesson.
Holistic, Skill-Based Learning
We don’t just teach riding—we teach horsemanship. Each session includes grooming, groundwork, and horse care, helping participants become confident, capable equestrians both in and out of the saddle.
Full 60-Minute Lessons
Unlike many centers, our lessons run a full hour, allowing time for grooming, groundwork, and riding. This structure supports deeper learning and stronger bonds between horse and rider.
Individualized Instruction
Every lesson is tailored to the unique goals and abilities of each participant. Our small class sizes and distraction-free environment ensure focused, personalized attention.
Ongoing Opportunities
We are the only program in the area offering continuous therapeutic riding sessions. As long as we can safely meet a participant’s needs, they are welcome to ride with us year-round—some for over three decades!
Experienced, Dedicated Team
Our certified instructors and trained volunteers receive ongoing education to maintain the highest standards of care and instruction. The longevity of our team reflects the strength of our community and the quality of our services.
Exceptional Equine Partners
Our horses are specially selected and trained for therapeutic work. Many have been with us for over 10 years—a rare achievement in the industry and a testament to the exceptional care they receive.
Peaceful, Scenic Setting
Located in beautiful Knox County, our facility offers a calm, quiet environment that enhances focus, safety, and the overall therapeutic experience.
Our year-round programs are designed to meet the unique needs of each rider, offering both group and private lessons for individuals with and without special needs. Far more than a pony ride, each 8-week session blends riding with essential horse care, safety, and ground handling skills.
Led by certified professional therapeutic riding instructors (CTRI's) and supported by trained volunteers, our lessons are personalized to help riders achieve meaningful goals—building confidence, independence, and equestrian skill.
Flagship Programs:
Adaptive/Therapeutic Riding
Our flagship program leverages the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding to enhance participants’ physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. It empowers students to move beyond their disabilities by developing real riding skills in a fun and supportive environment. Harnessing the healing power of horses, this program enhances physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being while teaching real riding skills in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Horsin’ Around
Perfect for independent riders with special needs and beginners of all abilities, this program emphasizes natural horsemanship both in the saddle and on the ground. It’s not just about riding—it’s about connecting. At The Shane Center, we believe in building trust, respect, and communication between horse and human. Natural horsemanship helps us create partnerships that are calm, kind, and full of heart.
Stable Buddies
The Stable Buddies program is designed for younger participants (under age 12) or those who require direct supervision for life skills. For safety and support, a parent or caregiver must be present and attentive during each session.
Each participant’s experience is tailored to their interests and needs. We’ll work with you to determine the best focus:
Games & Fun Activities – Engaging, horse-themed games that build confidence and connection.
Focused Learning – Educational sessions with handouts and instruction on topics like horse health, nutrition, and hoof care.
Hands-On Barn Work – Practical experience with tasks like mucking stalls, washing buckets, and caring for equipment.
Our specially trained horses, adaptive equipment, and unwavering commitment to safety and excellence ensure every participant receives a transformative, enriching experience.
Our eight-week sessions are priced as follows:
Riding and/or Groundwork Lessons: $680
Stable Buddies Program: $320
We gladly accept payments through Family Support Services and waiver programs.
Your tuition secures your spot for the full eight-week session. If needed, payment plans are available—just let us know!

The Shane Center for Therapeutic Horsemanship proudly serves individuals aged 5 and older with a wide range of abilities and diagnoses, including—but not limited to—cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, spina bifida, autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other cognitive and physical challenges.
Our top priorities are safety and ensuring that each participant receives the maximum therapeutic benefit from our programs. All prospective students must undergo an evaluation by our Executive Director and submit the required documentation before being accepted into the program.
The Shane Center welcomes participants of all sizes; however, for safety reasons, the maximum weight limit for riding programs is 200 pounds. Groundwork lessons will be offered in place of riding. Participants over 180 pounds will be asked to demonstrate sufficient head and neck control, balance, and coordination using one of our riding simulators before joining a mounted session.
Due to the specific demands of our horses, volunteers, insurance policies, and industry standards, we reserve the right to limit or deny participation if we are unable to safely accommodate an individual’s needs. Additionally, The Shane Center maintains a zero-tolerance policy for unsafe, disruptive, or disrespectful behavior. We reserve the right to refuse or discontinue services if a student, family member, or caregiver compromises the safety or well-being of our staff, volunteers, horses, or facility environment.
